Hi, I am Gaaron, (I am female) despite my user name
I came across this site when I was googling help re 'compression' shown in exif. To which I found wonderful info & learned a lot.
I have a Canon DSLR 400D with zoom lens. Because I don't actually use it to its full potential, but like its quality. I wanted to 'update' & get one which was easier to carry around. I've been trying out the Canon SX50 HS ....hence seeing 'compression' in the EXIF.
I look forward to 'conversing', or rather, asking questions!

Hi Gaaron and welcome to CiC! I have the Canon SX40 HS and love it but now that the SX50 is available I'm thinking about trading up. I couldn’t be sure if you got your answer to what tag 0X0103 (Compression) means but if you didn't, it specifies how the image was changed for export. A '1' means no compression and is what is referred to as a TIFF image and a '6' means JPEG compression.

Thanks for your info! I learned in my reading CiC earlier about jpegs/tiffs/raw.... The 'compression' text in the EXIF I'm on about gives the amount as 3000(or something similar)! It doesn't have that particular info on my DSLR, unless it's under a diff text. I'm going through everything to see if the SX50 HS it's as good , if not better than my 'old' entry level 400D.
Have just printed all the 'guides' arrgghh. Some bedtime reading ha ha. But think I may have used my brain power (?) now, as am updating myself on new pc specs!
Have you looked at the differences between your SX40 & the 50 (besides zoom)?

Hi Gaaron, not all EXIF values are used by all cameras and there may be camera specific extension values that are in addition to the basic ones. Each EXIF item has a reference tag and a value. You may find additional EXIF items and values in this document:

The other big difference between the SX40 and SX50 is the ability to export the images in RAW mode with the SX50. There are minor minimum aperture and other settings differences mostly dealing with the longer zoom range but also with things like the burst rate.

Thankyou so much for your help, I wish I'd found this site earlier. It certainly would have lessened my headaches . Im off to have a look at the link you've given. I did my homework lastnight & read the 'guides' I printed out

The link re EXIF tags/values was really useful, I'm sure I'll be making further use of it. And, I now know what the acronym EXIF stands for.....in my head I called it Extra Info ha ha
