    Orb Weaver

    Giant Golden Orb Weaver.

It was quite fun photographing the big gal from a couple of different angles. Just lucky to get the water droplets due to fall off from the sprinkling in the adjacent property.

The male is sooooooo tiny it was really hard getting focus but there were 5-6 of them on the outer edges of the web so could pick one which was relatively still.

Thanks for viewing and any compositonal/pp suggestions/barbs that you may have.

Had to come back and tell ya Bobo, I have looked a few times and again....I love 2 and 4 but I think #3 is in my all time top 5 spider images I might have seen, at very least top 10. It just really works for me.

James and Jack, thanks. Glad you like these. Was worried that they were a bit too creepy to like.

Wow Paul - Top 10, you made my day bro.

Which way up are these spiders in real life? It just seems a little strange to see them standing on top of the web.

But your spiders might be a little cleverer than their UK relatives.

Well 4 really is my pick for a variety of reasons. I would go for 3 but, and here is your barb from me Bobo. Three is a great shot but I find, what I reckon could be the sprinkler in the background but which looks like some ghostly green and yellow duck looming over the spider, a tad distracting. Only my opinion though, and which on the posted comments, makes me a very insignificant minority of one! Nice work on all of them though, with great DOF.

    Bobo,

Can you explain the mist shot? Was it naturally misty? Did you spray the web?

Also, are these shots taken in Ontario or are you currently on one of your Asia trips?

Thanks Geoff, Ken, Bill. I appreciate the feedback and will try better next time.

Orientation - these shots were taken from the side of the web but not square to the direction of the girl. Proper directional position could not catch the droplets so took the shots at a slanted position.

In #3 - It was going to be cropped similar to #2 but that wou[d have made #2 almost identical. Left the background "bird" in place as it looked like it was going to pounce on the subject. A couple of local photographers made the same comment as Ken but retracted on seeing #2.

In #4, the orientation was turned 90 degrees CCW in PS.

Mist - it was not mist but fall off from sprinkling that was going on in an adjacent property. The mild breeze just blew it over and I was scrambling to get the action shots before it stopped. That evening bought 2 small spray bottles, one fine mist, one for larger drops.

Location - taken in Hong Kong, leaving 28th. This place is literally teeming with bugs of all sorts and could not pass up the opportunity (hence the lack of bird shots though those are plentiful too).

I think the above is a wonderful image. The lines of the web taking us into the frame, at the end of which is 'that thing'. Brilliant composition.

Great shots, I like them all Bobo. I shot a Spiny Orb Weaver at the Key West Botanical Garden while I was in the Keys, I will post it tonight.

Anne, Joe, Gretchen - appreciate the positive comments.

Donald - Thanks. Interestingly one of the photographers mentioned in an earlier reply wants a large print.
