Painting with light

I'm getting almost giddy with joy using my newfound lightbrush (see Look what I found).

Lighting a shot like this conventionally would take some very careful positioning of at least three heads. Here it's done by a little judicious waving of the lightwand.

Nikon D800, Sigma 70 mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro, f/16, 10+5+2+1 sec at four different positions of the Broncolor Lightbrush.

Quite a nice shot. It shows the wonderful texture of the subject. Ilike the black background too...

At one time some photographers would use a continuous flood light source and move it around and over the image for shadowless lighting. Your Lightbrush would be the same principle but, would probably not become hot like a flood light does...

Sometimes, photographers will also use a spot source to highlight a certain point in the image...

BTW, a photograpner can also play with this technique using a flash and triggering it with the test button in manual. It would be best done in a completely dark room or outside at night without any constant light sources in the image. Exposure would be by a test basis. I am thinking, whoever, if I wanted to cover a large area by painting with flash, I might probably try a flash like the Vivitar 285HV (I got mine for about ten dollars at a yard sale). You can set the 285HV for a specific aperture. That "might" give some more control over exposure...

Yes, I was one of those, and the technique was part of the syllabus when I trained back in the '60s. As you say it was used mostly as a way to make shadowless product shots on white backgrounds, and boy did I do a lot of those.

But then it was reinvented in the '90s and used differently; more as a way of creating intricate lighting effects before anyone thought of Photoshop. It couldn't be used with digital capture back then, because quality digital then meant scanning backs which didn't work with this technique as they required constant lighting over their entire scan time.

But with today's cameras it can be used again, and it's fun to play with.

Or maybe it is not a shot as a shot happens very fast. It is just another procedure of creating an artwork (?).
