Gill I dared to play with your image for a while. Please, if you want I will erase this post as you let me know in private for example.

I explain what I have done.
But before let me tell you that your image reminds me England with it's misty weather and cold.
First I have made a small barrel distortion under lens correction in CS as it increases the sense of perspective.
I have drawn two lines in red. One vertical and another one horizontal. OK you can see that
I have observed that the lamp is not exactly - exactly - at the center of the composition, aligned with what seems to be the door at the end, far away there.
May be - just may be - the lamp is not in the middle. I mean physically, on location.

On the other side, I think you should consider to shoot horizontally just to see what you get.
What doesn't please me very much in your image - in spite of considering an excellent image - is the fact that it is too vertically symmetrical.
You have the horizon at the middle of the picture. I don't know if balancing the crop up or down wouldn't make it better. More "ground" less sky or vice-versa.
The sky is so dramatic and menacing that I tend to suggest that you move to more "ground".

And, last suggestion but not the least, why not some person on the image ?
Well, if you don't want any person on it it is your option.
But, if there are people around moving, shoot 4, 5, 6 pictures and erase them on their layers.
I assume you are working with a tripod.

Poor me, I lost mine one of these days. I left it somewhere and I suppose it was on the street.

Why not one person towards us blurred, expressing movement, at 2/3 of the frame. ?
Or even... a doll laying on the ground. Yes a doll. I know what a doll is. An old one.
To add drama to the scene.

Oh well, just letting my conscious flow for a while based on your image.

I've tried different crops/proportions and decided that - to my eyes - this version was more appealing precisely because of its symmetry I have some specific shots in mind for this location, but they are going to depend on a combination of luck - as far as the weather is concerned - and the opportunity to get there, although thankfully it's only about a 45 minute drive away.

I didn't have my tripod with me this visit: my husband's patience only stretches so far

I wonder if, for the purposes of trying to keep this thread for monthly challenge entries (just for fun though it is), we should make comments and offer advice on images in seperate threads or via PMs? It's just that the thread gets very long by the end of the month if we all pitch in with C & Cs.

Unfortunately it's one of those conflicting situations where there are good reasons to do it both ways - the best compromise I could think of was to temporarily hide the commentary whilst voting is open and then restore it afterwards.

A better solution (in my opinion) would be for people to ALSO post their images into a new thread (one for each image) and have people post C & C into the new thread (in fact, if such a thread existed I'd be happy to move any commentary from the challenge thread to the appropriate thread for that image).

The other thing that might help is if you change your default thread view to show 40 images instead of the usual 20 so you only get half as many pages (that's what I do, and I don't think that I've ever seen the challenge thread go over 2 pages).

Photographers are a lot like surgeons in that "when they're working, they're in charge". Hubby should be carrying all the gear, and place it firmly and promptly in your hand when you reach out and command "Tripod"!

I don't think it would work Antonio - it would be difficult to associate the post with the image, and it would be a nightmare to moderate.

I have an idea though -- I'll post a poll on it in the feedback forum ...

As my passion for photography and his passion for video don't always coincide we sort of take it in turns - usually depending on the destination - whether one of the other takes precedence. Or whether we're simply having a day out together, which this was.

However ... I might have to look into hypnosis as a possible solution to his lack of skills in the photographer's assistant department
