Hello from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Hello Everyone!
I have a rather long name, but I go by Ranjit with family and friends. Although, I have been handling many different types of films and various models of cameras all my life, I have to say that I am a noob when it comes to understanding the science, the techniques and creativity of professional photography. I am a 58 years old Indian citizen, and I live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with my family. As retirement age is fast approacing, I am planning to get seriously involved in documentary photography as my second career and to revitalize my worklife in a new direction. The area that interests me is documenting the social lives of indigenous and improverished peoples of the world through photography. I hope that I can make a difference.
To embark on this journey with the 'right' footing, I plan to enroll in the complete course in photography offered by the New York Institite of Photography (NYIP) beginning in early 2013. I believe that this will not only give me the solid foundation that I need, but also expose me to the wonderful world of photography. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos to share with you guys at this time, but I will certainly do so as soon as I get some. I look forward to interacting closely with each and everyone of you, and at the same time, learning as much as possible about photography. Who knows? Maybe our paths will cross in the near future.
Cheers,
Ranjit

Hello Ranjit and welcome to CiC. I hope you enjoy being part of the forum and that being so does help your photographic learning and development.
By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Hi Ranjit,
Welcome to the CiC forums from me too.
It sounds like you are currently in a profession that required formal training and are planning on tackling photography the same way.
I am guessing that's a correspondence/remote learning course and sounds expensive and without personal contact and other benefits.
I have never done such a course, but I did attend both a photography club and a course at a local technical college when I was much, much younger and wonder whether the personal "hands on" contact is better not having that?
For one thing, you get to use (their) equipment that you probably don't have.
Are there any courses available local to you? Just a thought.
Look forward to seeing a picture from you soon.
All the best,
