Hmmm ... I'll have to look into using .png rather than .jpg in certain cases. I think .png supports transparency capabilities, which might apply to some of the things I'm trying.

My (uninformed) understanding is that .png doesn't support layers and/or masks. For those capabilities, you use .tif or .psd (with Adobe image editors).
