Looking forward to hearing about your experiences with this bit of kit Donald. I've often looked at these myself, and now that the knees are not so flexible, it might help! I see that you lashed out for the Canon finder. Did you consider a cheaper option?

Mike - I did. Richard (rpcrowe) wrote very positively, some time back, about his Seagull unit. At the end of the day there was no real reason for buying the Canon unit other than that I was in the fortunate position at the moment of being able to do so. A bit wasteful on my part, but ...........!

think you'll find it quite useful sir-would only add that in my experience the attachment""grip" could be a little firmer, I've had mine slip off unexpectedly whilst carrying the camera, tripod etc over my shoulder in the field.
robust build though thank goodness-feel its a case of getting what I paid for in that. :)

Tim - Thank you for coming back in with that comment. I had read similar things when I was looking at reviews. With it being brand new, I'm finding the grip very secure on my 40D. Maybe it loosens up a bit over time, or maybe Canon have made a design adjustment on the Ec-C attachment adapter. Will need to watch that.

Thanks Tim - I should have mentioned that - I've had mine fall off once - fortunately onto a soft lawn.

As for the other options (taking a chance on muddying the waters here ;) ) but the most useful solution would be a flip out screen. It's been hotly debated by many on another forum - I strongly suspect the ones against the flip out screen have never done any macro in awkward situations. OTOH, a flip screen must necessarily be smaller than a fixed one for a given body size, and it seems that size is important with screens (otherwise why take a laptop/pod out it the field and use it for LV?).

I too considered a Seagull RAF, but in the end I went for the genuine Nikon because I felt that the Seagull was lacking in build quality compared with Nikon. I have no doubt that Canon is also superior. It's easy to forget, but you only get what you pay for!
