My attempt at this project will be with my trusty Canon 60D, and a 50mm f1.4.
I don't use this lens nearly enough, and so I am hoping this will force me to work on composition manually, rather than via zoom.

I'm in the same boat Andrew. I have a 50mm 1.8 that sits in my bag most of the time , so I will use it on my Sony A99 and see what i can come up with.
Look forward to the challenge.
Cheers, Greg
Pretty neat shot imho if not at least it is different.
Perhaps crop the top down a bit so that the flame goes directly into the right top corner and cut out a bit from the bottom so that the lower bit of the burner has "support" on the edge?
What are you not happy with? I like it quite a lot, though consider allowing more black space above and to the right of the tip of the flame. That tip seems to be too crowded for me.
Thanks Bobo, and Mike.
Mike, I'm not sure what I don't like. I think it just lacks creativity, and execution. I expect more of myself.
I plan to try both of your suggestions tonight, as far as the crops go. Thanks for looking!
I like the extra room at the tip of the flame. Simple but nicely done. I have a thing for fire!
That looks like propane. Have you ever tried Mapp gas and a Turbo head? It will give you more colors.
I like the edit with more room for the flame.
Exactly as I was thinking. Well done and definitely worth the effort to make the change!
Can't add any more than what has been already said with the edited one Andrew.
A definite improvement with just a slight adjustment.
Nice work.
Andrew, I broke out my Mapp torch in an attempt to capture some more color and, well, I have to tell you that you made it look easy when it is not so. I cannot get the flame and the torch head to both look anywhere close to as good as yours. And I am not getting the colors I expected. Might have to dig out the acetylene torch?
Wow, thank you gentlemen. You're too kind. I'm still not sold on the image myself, but I suppose it has some merit.
Jon, I haven't tried an MAPP torch, would be interested to though!
