Christmas and the Single Man

I'm getting 'fed up' with third rate photos of excessive Christmas Dinners, taken on mobile phones under impossible conditions, being passed around and discussed in detail at my local pub.

So I have quickly produced an alternative dinner.



Just a bit of fun; although for some people this would actually be a welcome meal!

The garnish, and the table decoration, came straight from my garden - and there isn't much to choose from at this time of the year. The only alternative which I have left is leeks; and I didn't think they fitted into the scene.

Maybe a sachet of brown sauce would have been an idea for UK single men; but I never use it myself.

Incidentally, on a technical note, I see that the fork highlights are a little on the yellow side. I used a daylight lamp placed slightly to my right to give a little bit of shadow but the room lights must have slightly influenced the left side.

Easy to correct with a layer and mask though.

And I turned the can opener handle to a position which gave a little 'sparkle'.

The table cloth was actually a tea towel (glass cloth) which limited me somewhat in available width.

Geoff you made me smile and brought back memories. I wanted to ask everyone what was their favorite food so I could add to my list of wonders from around the world. I must have been 13 the last time I ate that prefab stuff. I did not know it was still made. Actually it may be why I got into cooking, my folks did not cook and we had a lot of can food. What would be your meal of choice if you had a chef to prepare it for you?

There are a can or two in my pantry, too. What's surprising is that I'm not single, and my Bride shares an occasional Spam sandwich with me. The habit is left over from WW2. And, if this canned treat doesn't hit the spot, there's always the Golden Arches . . .

They used to manufacture it here as well; but the European Spam production has moved to Holland.

The bacon version is good; an improvement on the blandness of the original.

Always useful to have something like this in the larder.

In reality, my Christmas dinner wasn't a lot different from this.

One of my wealthier friends purchased a rather large cooked silverside joint but after a couple of slices he decided it wasn't up to the standard he required so passed it on to me.

After it was removed from the packaging bag and left to 'breathe' for a little while; and a few slices more towards the middle of the joint I thought the taste was quite good.

So I froze down several slices and ate the rest, in various forms, over the next few days.

For Christmas Day, I simply added a selection of fresh vegetables in a basic sauce, with some parsley!

A bit of an unplanned Christmas Day though. I usually go down to my local pub for a few beers with friends before my meal.

But due to a change of plan, and an absence of taxis, I ended up as a driver so turned up just half an hour before closing time and was restricted to only one pint of weak beer!

They had better make some alternative arrangements for next year though!

Or dipped in batter mix and deep fried in dripping.

With a potential heart attack in every mouthful.

Incidentally, the best batter mix just uses flour and beer, which gives a much crisper batter than other sources of liquid.
