#1 = wall hanger.
#2 = wild life shot.
Depends on how you want to present this incredibly good image.
I wouldn't disagree with Bobo; but No1 does it for me. A very good image.
Well done.

IMO for vignettes to work on wildlife shots they need to be very subtle. The OP is right on the edge of that limit but not over the ilne. Personally I think the revised crop makes more of a difference than the vignette.
Good question. Vignette is probably the most-abused, badly executed thing in the post-processing world. But if there is just a little, so little that you can't spot it, then it is a great thing. Any more, and it is cheeze.
I think you hit it pretty well. Maybe just a tiny bit softer/more subtle would be ideal.
I am in total agreement with Bobo.
I am only in partial agreement with Scott. I agree that vignette is overly abused and poorly executed, I strongly disagree that in all cases it should be used so sparingly that you can't spot it. I have seen, on many, many occasions, vignette used quite creatively, and the image would be 'cheeze' without it.
With the exception of over contrast, over saturation, selective coloring, etc.!
And also vignetting is one of the best techniques available to finish a photo, bring out the subject, direct the eye, and target lighting.
But more to a response, James?
The crop of the first one is very nice! I wonder if it might go tighter?
As for the vig? What would you think about tightening it up into his face/rack and then feathering it out more for a nice gradual fall-off to the outer frame, and then opacity to taste?
After all, the purpose of the vignette would be to bring out the buck's face/rack, which is the subject.
And to answer your topic?
Definitely yes for the vignette.

In general, I do like vignettes. However, I find in your first image the centre of the vignette is so far away from the centre of interest of the image that my eyes get confused and jump from one to the other. It doesn't feel like an harmonious image - but no-one else has mentioned it so it may just be me.
Hi Terry,
Too true, and much more eloquently. Apologies.![]()
Hi Dave!
No apologies necessary, sir!
I just didn't want you feeling all alone by yourself!
We'll just be all alone together!
Oh, and while I have been accused of a lot things, eloquence has never been one among them!
wow I guess I didnt know the debate I was starting lol. I just opened a trial version of lightroom 3 I found in my desk and wanted to try some things out . I think I will look ijnto lightroom 4 when trial runs out. I am glad that my pic was so well received I might play with it some more over weekend (i am working 13+ hrs aday right now) but I will take advice to heart try to center vignette on subject and use more sparingly. once again thank you all for your interest and commentary.
