Re: Why do you use a photography website?
I missed the original by a long time, but in reply to Dave's question that started the thread and sort of in reply to the resurrected version:
I use CIC because it's a community of photographers sharing images and thoughts about photography, because of its variety, but most of all because of the (mostly) courteous interaction of the members and the efficient way that the moderators deal with spam and trolls.
I also use flick, as it provides a convenient way to share images, an easy and reliable way to post to CIC, and a backup for some of my shots. I used to use Nikon Image Space but the 20GB limit is, well, limiting, and you can't get a BB compatible link from it, and that's why I ended up on flickr. However, I'm not so happy since the Yahoo take-over, as I have long been one of those who refuse to give away my soul to FaceBook and anything Google-oid, if anything better appears I may well move.

Re: Why do you use a photography website?
I have smugmug, and my photos show in the same order on the iPhone as on the PC--most recent first, when I have the gallery set that way.

Re: Why do you use a photography website?
Very interesting topic came to life in 5 years!
My main job is advertising on the Internet.
I'm sure right now the issue of a personal website is very important.
Someone will say - Oh, this guy from Russia lives like on the Moon!
- There are many different social networks and forums, why do you need this personal site?
The problem is that social networks are arranged so that you always pay.
This is not beneficial to them, so your content is always lost immediately after publication.
Your content (photos) dies in 12 hours, no one can find them.
We publish photos in Instagram - pay!
Post photos to Facebook - pay!
Social networks do not need your photos, they need your money and your personal data. To sell them later in the next Trump election.
Only if you have a personal website and good SEO, you can find people.
SITE + Instagram + YouTube + FaceBook + CIC etc.
In all cases, you do not exist, you are not, no one sees you except 10-30 friends.
