I always use filters for protection. Seeing the kind of grub I get on them over time I am glad I do it. It feels better cleaning a filter than a lens, especially if you aren't sure about how strong the coating is.
I buy from Amazon directly in most cases and in my experience they are always cheaper than the shops for photography equipment. I bought Lowenpro from them and some filters and their range is just as extensive in most cases.
Hoya is my favourite brand. Good quality for a reasonable price. I use their UV filters and polarization filters. Good metal, so no trouble getting them unscrewed from the camera.

You guys know what a pain it can be if your filter is stuck on the lens and you can't get it off without cutting your own hand almost.

Quoted for truth. I once had to remove a 72mm circular polarizer with a massive pair of channel locks. Probably the riskiest situation that lens has ever been in.

I picked up a pair of plastic filter wrenches from B&H for about $5.00. They live in my camera bag and have come to my rescue more than once. They are one of the best investments I ever made.
