Snake River Sunrise

Here is another image that was taken in extreme cold weather ( -13 F). The moisture rising above the river freezes on the surfaces of trees and bushes producing a frosted look to the flora. The sun was just coming up over the mountains to the left and the back lighting on the trees and bushes caused them to glow. The light on the river was being broken up by the fog and was producing very subtle colors of a rainbow. And although one cannot see it in the photo, quiet filled the place. All I could really hear was my own breathing, my heart beat in my ears, and the crunching on the snow when I moved my feet. Click on the image to see a large version.

Bruce, I don't have a heater for my camera, but sometimes some of its functions slow down. And Paul, as for thumbs, I froze mine off.

-13F IS cold and with a bit of wind it could easily feel like double.

Heaters and thumbs etc - there are ways.

One very thin fleece inner glove, a toasty disposable hand warmer in the palm, another glove on top of that. The hand warmer will give some degree of warmth to both your hands and the camera. Put it between the 2 gloves and not directly against skin. Outer gloves that have a flippable cover for the fingers is ideal. In extreme cold, another pair of hand warmers in the jacket pockets. Compared to the ones in the gloves the pockets ones can get really really toasty. The preferred gloves are ones that will stop wind and are somewhat waterproof. One good way to test wind proofing is to blow hard against the glove firmly on the mouth, not good if your breath gets through.

Have not yet found the ideal glove but this set works ok most of the time. Will keep looking though.

Edit : forgot to mention that the gloves should be rib-less otherwise they will be too thick for camera buttons and controls.

Bobo, thanks for the info on keeping the hands warm. I will give it a try. By the way, the current temperature is 35 F, 52 degrees warmer than our low a week ago. Go figure.
