Hi Folks – Rory from London England

I’m in my late sixties and retired twelve years ago. My interests include travel, writing and gemstones. I want to use photography to illustrate my books. When I was a teenager I was interested in black and white photography and wanted to be a professional natural history film maker and photographer. Life intervened and now in retirement I am learning about digital photography.

On my wall is a photograph of a jungle, hills and sky which I took after trekking for five days. A friend who used to be a professional tried to balance the colour and as he said “it is either too blue or too green.” He had advised me to use point and shoot on my camera and promised that it could be altered afterwards. Clearly it couldn’t and I am disinclined to hike through the jungle again so I want to learn to use my cameras properly.

I have two cameras both Canon a Power Shot A480 which goes everywhere with me and an A12 which I take when I am serious. The tutorials on this site are helpful and I’m working my way through them. When I know a bit more I hope to be able to ask some intelligent questions.

I wouldn't necessarily wait until you've read and understood them all, if there's anything you don't quite 'get', do ask anyway - we always say the only daft question is the one you don't ask (if it holds you back).

I guess you'll be taking pictures of quite small things then?
The smaller sensor cameras (when compared to a DSLR), like you have, are in some ways better for that kind of photography because of the enhanced Depth of Field and the lens' usually focuses quite close too.

At the top of the page, click the Settings link.
On the left of the page that opens, somewhere near the top is an Edit Profile option, click that.
When that opens; scroll down to the bottom, the two fields concerned are way down there.
Having entered the info, click Save Changes

There are other ways to get the 'right' details you want into your account (e.g. to change your Username), if you were to let us know, via PM, what these are.

Alternatively, you can just stop using this profile that you created for yourself and create a new one. 'Rexroth' will then just disappear from use.

Hi Rory, I would like to live in London but apart from the LMS at Russell Sq I don't know anybody. It seemed friendly during the Olympics, is it like that all the time .

Hi Rory Its probably the influx of northerners to the south during the olympics but the british people are a freindly bunch normally anyway.

hi rory,
it's good to hear that though life intervened, the photographer streak lived through. i am about forty and starting into digital photography, i do hope that at sixty i would look back at this time and feel satisfied at how far i have travelled

I'm glad I've sorted out my name etc. and thank you for help in doing that.

I'll be very happy to ask questions as well as working through the tutorials.

I've lived in London for nearly fifty years and have found people generally friendly. Then I find people friendly in most places.

So camera out, tutorials out and manual out and I'll be back soon with questions.
