For your comments and critique, I present a shot from working with my cousin at our local ski park. My main question is whether the black and white processing works. I tweaked the channels to separate him from the background a little more strongly than in the original, and using a little too much flash forced me to apply some highlight recovery. Other than that, processing is limited to resizing and sharpening. No, this is not cropped. Yes, I am a lucky sod.
Canon 60D with 20mm f2.8 prime. Manual mode, ISO1600, f3.5, 1/200s. One IR-triggered remote flash about 20ft (6m) from base of the jump, left and about 10ft (3m) below the skier.

This is one of those shots when flash really benefits the photographer. By lighting the main subject and rendering the background dark you have contrasted beautifully. The patch of snow in the foreground provides some relevant context and perspective. The skier is nicely suspened and the action stopped beautifully. As for the B&W approach, a good choice. It helps to eliminate the noice in the darker background and colours are usually a bit undersaturated in these areas as well.
