Scenes from Yoho National Park

If you go to Banff National Park, don't miss the adjacent and far less known Yoho National Park. There is a particular section of the park that is best reached by bus because of the long, boring, steep climb to get to it. That part of the park allows only about 4 busloads each day and is my favorite part of the entire area near Banff. The reservations for the bus ride are best made two (or is it three?) months ahead of time to the day when the tickets go on sale. My experience is that the tickets are sold out within the first few hours.

All photos shown here are from Yoho. All but Photos #3 & #4 are from that special area of the park reached by bus, as is the photo that I posted earlier here. They were captured in 2009 and converted recently to black-and-white.

C&C encouraged, though I have no questions to ask.

Somehow, I do not very often get "grabbed" by BW photos.

You're not necessarily "not getting it," Robin. It may be that you simply enjoy color photos more than black-and-white photos. That would be no different, as an example, than liking water colors better than acrylics.

On the other hand, if you're new to critically reviewing photography, your perspective may be a relatively uninformed point of view. Once you have more experience reviewing all styles of photography and become more informed in the process, you might come around to liking monochromes more. Or you might not.

Mike I suspect your are right.

It is a both and thing.
I am certain that I like colour better, but I am also very new at attempting C&C.

Some but not many B/W "stand out to me", but for now some B/W, especially landscapes don't "look right" in B/W.

I sometimes puzzle of a photo, not only B/W, then puzzle even more when I read some C&C.

But never mind, I have come to see it is 'art'.

At least I am here, once when I was younger, maybe about 20 years ago, I would never have even come on to a site like this,
so for me it is all learning, and having fun.

#3 is my favorite.

And I agree.

For me it is quite dramatic, it looks like a steep fall off into a deep ravine, though we can't quite see it. And there are loose stones everywhere!

Creates trepidation in me, maybe more, I do not like heights and edges.
Even going up the tower in Melbourne is a "dont look down" experience.

All very nice, Mike. I do like #3 as well, it is very gripping, if you will. The juxtaposition of various angles of the landscape as well as your wife's hiking pole and legs all create a very interesting image. And of course the perspective creates that "on the edge" look (which makes me uneasy since I'm afraid of heights). Nice work!

Mike, I like #5 the best also. I think it is the composition that I'm drawn to, although, comparing to #2 which is a different version of the same scene I also like the coloring of #5 better.

For those of you who like #5, the mood strongly reminds me so much of Timothy O'Sullivan and Carleton Watkins and others of the 19th century that I feel almost as if I entered a time warp to make the photo.

That's a really great exercise, Bobo. Some of the master photographers, including Kertesz if I remember correctly, envisioned their images taking into account the size they hoped to print them, including the vintage prints, which were the same size as the negative.

Your choices are mostly the same as mine. The one glaring exception is that I wouldn't make a print of #3 in any size, at least I can't imagine ever doing that. Though I like it for viewing on a television or on the Internet, it's not the style of photograph that I would print.

Don't ask me why, I do not know why.
