Naches River

From yesterdays trip. Normally I would have had a little more time in any one place to set up, however yesterday I was at the mercy of others as I was a tag along on a scouting trip to see how the fishing season was starting off. Fairly slow yet. C&C is always welcome.

At times it drove me nuts to not be throwing a fly as well. I am still in the gear replacement phase of being thieved. So I opted to go and see what images I may be able to make.

First river was the Naches.

The first one is especially interesting to me, mostly for its potential with two very different compositions to tell two different stories.

Composition #1
Ideally, you have this photo with a little more space to the left of the foreground rock. If you don't, that's not necessary. Notice the dead tree on the far left. Crop where its lowest branch that sticks into the sky is displayed. That emphasizes the gorgeous texture of the large rock, the small rocks in the water, and the ice and snow on the river bank, while leaving a drop-dead gorgeous background to round out the image.

Composition #2
Crop at the top just barely above the tall green trees on the right. This will be slightly below the top of the tall green tree on the left. Crop at the bottom just above the bottom, front corner of the foreground rock.

Thank you, Mike. I do have a little more room on the left of the rock. Unfortunately, while the camera and bubble said straight...it appeared to lean some and needed a rotation where I lost the room. I do have a couple more close to the same and will have a look. I will also have a look at you crop suggestions.

Interesting, Paul. I was actually wondering how you figured out what "straight" is for that first photo. When you closely examine the trees, they are going in just about every direction, even after taking into account the slight perspective distortion on the right and left sides. I think you did a marvelous job to get the orientation looking so natural.

A very good series of photos. Really, they are very beautiful.
And I got them in the mood. It seems that any time a grizzly will appear and scare the photographer!

Very nice shots Paul. I particularly like #2. I wonder if the third could do with a touch more contrast ?

You guys are so lucky to live near this sort of country ! I've probably whinged about this before but all we have here are slow running muddy rivers and gum trees.

Mike, with the way the trees and the sloping down away and to the left water.....I was surely thankful for my in camera horizon level. lol Even with the tool it is still a judgement to as level does not always appear correct. I am glad it looks as it should and does not make you feel like you are going to fall in.

Hi Paul - the second one is my pick I suppose this is partly because with the snow being a such a significant element in the photo it is very different from the scenery in my neighbourhood.

I really like the smooth water in the first picture. It looks cold but peaceful. I think I like the second one best but I like it a little better with some taken off the bottom - maybe just below the second rock from the river. I can't really say why but it is a very minor point. The third I would really like to see in the spring or the fall.

Wonderful images indeed Paul.
I don't fish but have a few friends that do. Photos like these are convincing me that it might be a good idea to go up the central highlands with them come winter and see if I can capture some photos like these and your fly fishing ones.

I actually thought of that composition as a third possibility. More important, I especially like the post-processing so much more. It's got such an uplifting feel the other one doesn't have. From the X-shaped clouds all the way down to the foreground detail, there's not a single area of this photo that isn't interesting. Yet the various elements complement rather than compete with each other.
