Re: How does your monitor show this?
I use an xRite Colormunki to calibrate my monitor and my printer - it does make a huge difference. I brought it into a small newspaper I was doing graphic design work for once; they calibrated all of their Macs and hey surprise suddenly all of their photos started looking a whole lot better in print. They had been blaming the press for color saturation issues, but in truth a small and almost unnoticeable shift in color on a monitor (which the eye easily and automatically compensates for) can translate into a glaring issue in print, particularly when coarser materials such as newsprint and industrial ink sets are involved.

Re: How does your monitor show this?
Initially when I viewed the 3 squares in Chrome browser they all looked the same, with fairly dark horizontal lines. That is strange I thought because I know I have a profiled monitor. So I checked in IE browser and the centre square was almost invisible, as it should be. So going back to Chrome I zoomed out to 100% and then, and only then, did the centre square disappear. Back in IE I zoomed in and out and it confirmed that only at 100% do these patterns show as they ought on a well profiled monitor. So thank you for bringing this up.

Re: How does your monitor show this?
The right-hand image does the blending on my totally uncalibrated and badly adjusted NEC 1990SX ;-)
After obsessing about color rendition for a while, I find I really don't care much any more. If I get the adjustment mo better, there's too much contrast for my poor old eyes . .

Re: How does your monitor show this?
Image looks as described on my monitor.
I used this exact image from this site to try and get my monitor calibrated better. My prints were coming out very very different to what I saw on screen so I bit the bullet and brought a monitor calibration device.
Best way to go by far. Straight away I am getting prints that match what I see on screen.
I brought the Spyder 4 Express and have been very happy with the results since. I was governed a lot by price to which one I brought and I got it from Ebay and saved a bit more than buying retail in New Zealand.
I would totally recommend getting a monitor calibration device.
