Seriously though, I'm not entirely sure how to answer that question, as there have probably been volumes, upon volumes written and published on that subject. Maybe if you gave us something a little more specific to start with?

In Photography it can be applied to determine the area of the canvass you wish to print your image on.

In any way that the individual artist wishes to apply them, to accomplish the look that they desire and/or the statement they wish to make!
