    New Species of UK Springtail....

.....found in my back garden yesterday afternoon
    New Species of UK Springtail....

We're not sure if it's a completely new species or if it's a species from New Zealand that has found it's way to Scotland. It's been describes as Calvatomina nr superba (nr = near to) for now.

if i saw that, id think 'what a tiny bug' not 'wow a new species of spring tail'

I keep on telling myself i should try and find out a little more about the things i shoot.

I cant quite make out the picture, is that on water?

No worries.....I thought what a tiny bug with funky eyes....had no idea it hadn't been recorded here before.

Aye, it's on water. Probably easier to tell in this shot:
    New Species of UK Springtail....

They are about 1.5mm long BTW and both shots were taken at 5:1 on a 40D. Will be trying for prettier shots if I get a chance but am more concerned with getting a confident ID on it first.

I don't suppose it's like stars; i.e. they won't name it "Andy" will they

Excellent shots as usual, I'm in awe

    Cheers,

Cheers Dave As far as anyone can tell it's a species that's already been described but never seen in Scotland....am still very chuffed to have found it though. I'll just have to keep looking for one that needs a name

I have loads more springtails on Flickr - here - if anyone wants a look.
