Northern Flicker mating chase
There were 4 flickers giving chase through the trees this morning. Getting a shot was a trick with all the branches and how quickly they leave a spot once landing. Not great compositions here and way to busy but I had fun and they are a pretty bird when flaring for a mate.

Beautiful photos and bird... The focus, detail and colours are striking, especially in the first photo.

A pity that you didn't get the first image with the right hand bird a fraction closer to the centre, Paul. That would have turned a good shot into a prizewinner.

Re: Northern Flicker mating chase
Interesting capture, well executed to catch them in flight. They are so fast.

Re: Northern Flicker mating chase
I have a couple chasing each other around here. They dont seem to have as much gold in underside of wing. Those are great shots!

Re: Northern Flicker mating chase
Thank you Geoff, John, Joe and James. I wish I had caught the first image one wing beat prior. I fully agree with you, Geoff. James, these guys do have some great color in the breeding season. The red/orange that appears to have a gold like quality tends to tone down later in the year. During this season they use the flash of color to attract mates.
