a bit of a splash!
hi there fellow shutter bugs! Well i was bored and thought to try out something i always wanted to try, high speed splash photos. My original plan was to use tomatoes but no it has been used in salads. And i didnt know about this till after i have set up the tank, lights and camera. So i scavenged around the house and decided on a lift can and golf balls. I did enjoy this experience and was glad i can try out the "family of angles" from "Lights, science & magic", and i would strongly recommend that book to anyone who would be interested in using flash's, studio lighting, ect. I have learnt alot from this shoot, and have ideas on how i can hopefully improve on these shots. These shots were edited in a some what quickish way but i do like them, what do you fine people think???

Unfortunately i was a tad wee bit late on the shutter on this one, but i like it.
Also, this will give me a control test so to speak for when i receive my nerotrigger!

Re: a bit of a splash!
I think you've done well, too, Allen. I prefer the shots of the golf balls: #4 best because of the bubbles.

Re: a bit of a splash!
Hi Allen!
Your lighting and timing look great.
Um, there may be something I’m seeing in your post production. I may be wrong so I’ll say what I’m seeing and you can tell me I’m way off base!
Here is my guess:
In all but #3 you have somehow painted (possibly a solid color?) below and around the objects black. You have used a hard brush.
In #1 I think I am seeing where the painting ends with the splash and some spots around the can that were missed, not quite reaching the can in all spots.
Same with #2 and there is a spot that was missed from the can to the right edge of the frame.
I don’t see any of this with #3.
#4 I’m seeing some “paint spots” above the balls.
The “paint spots” don’t seem to quite match up right.
Am I just seeing things again, Allen?

Re: a bit of a splash!
Like the shots Allen, especially the golf balls. You want golf balls in water.... just ask me I am expert at hitting them into the water.

Re: a bit of a splash!
Tony, you are 100% positively correct sir! I know i should of used a soft brush, and i was tired when i was editing these. Great eye, it took me a while to find it, and as for the spots, i think they are the places i used spot healing tool.

Re: a bit of a splash!
Fascinating that you captured the objects so clearly, Allen. I like liftsplash1 the best because the product is not viewed square on and your brain fills in the rest of the name, "Lift". It looks like real action. It would do well in an advertisement. Liftsplash2 and Golfsplash1 are too perfectly aligned and look more static than does Liftsplash1. Golfsplash2 bothers me because the golf balls are extremely off centered at the bottom. Still amazing captures though. My two cents worth...
