    What is it?

A friend sent me this photo, not at all a good one, but I can't figure out what it is. I'm hoping that Geoff, or some of the rest of you, who know your invertebrates will be able to help me. It was taken in the Sierra Nevada in California. Thanks in advance.

    What is it?

I am going to guess a fishing fly, looks man made.

    Cheers:

Thanks Allan for the reply. This critter was actually alive. My friend kept moving it off of the trail and it kept returning. But if I had been there it might have been bait!!

    Chuck,

It is tough to tell from that photo, but it makes me think of a hummingbird moth...

    What is it?

See the similarity in body structure? Obviously looks like a different species if that is what it was. Also, my guess is it recent emerged from its cocoon. That would explain those curled wings and its desire to stay on the path (it would be warmer in the sun there).

    Hope this helps.

Bill, it may very well be one of the hummingbird moths. I have been trying to find it on the web = no luck. Thank you for helping.

Sure he is not messing with you, Chuck? I would have said a fishing fly as well.

    Re: What is it?

Paul, This is for real. The woman who sent this to me is not likely to joke around. I thought it looked very much like a fishing fly as well. So here is my question. Aren't fishing flies tied to imitate real critters that exist in nature? If so, what is the critter?
