The behavior you saw near the end where it was coming towards you was not aggressive - they will still try to get to where they 'feel' safe, even if that is on the other side of a threat. Though it was in a defensive position, you were not in danger at the distance you were shooting from.

I didn't know whether the snake was a male or a female. Did you determine that by the shape of the rattles? I understand that that is one indicator but it's a nuance that I'm not capable of detecting.
