Rapid Creek

I waited for the sun to go down to get this, and set up the tripod. Using a cable release and settings: 20mm, 50 ISO, 25 seconds, F:11; I used a hand held flash and hit the tree roots about 5 times to bring them out of hiding. I was trying to get a consistent light without shadows and emphasise the roots of these trees. Also wanted a long exposure to smooth out the water. Click to enlarge, C&C welcome.

Yup really nice, I love the reflected colors in the creek. Using a flash that way is a really interesting idea. Did you just use it raw or did you soften it with anything?

Indeed very nice. I'm a bit puzzled by what is going on in the top right of the image, it just seems distractingly light, especially the tree trunks. Is that the effect you were looking for? I would prefer to see more detail there.

You have suceeded in getting the roots to stand out.

Can I ask if the water was flowing away from you?
I think so, because of the step in it with no 'riser'.

The top certainly is bright, but I don't have the skill to suggest how it might be brought down without just turning to a grey 'mush'.

Thanks Dave, The sun was down but this is a long exposure with varying light so it can be expected. I dont know how to change it without effecting the rest of the foreground and the main subject. The shot shooting the other way was better but is in the May comp.

Thanks Dave, the water was flowing away. The top corner is beyond my capabilities to deal with but I am keen to learn how to fix it if anyone else knows.
