Fishing on water

Went to the foreshore today with the aim of getting some images of the kite surfers using my rarely used continuous focus mode. They were not there so I can only assume they had noticed there was no wind.

Anyway, soon found another subject and decided that due to the harsh and ever changing lighting conditions I would attempt to use the 'exposure lock' button (something I have not done before), then focus on subject, lock focus and recompose. The object being to meter on an area that I hoped would not give me blown highlights or too dark a subject.

Was I pleased with the trial, yes, there was only minimal highlight clipping. Taken with D300 and 18-200mm.

Was expecting birds

Nice set of shots.

There does seem to be a bit of "haze" in them.

For me Grahame, #2 is perhaps a bit too dark in the foreground/men.

In fact I think there may be another image in that shot; try viewing in the Lytebox and dragging it up and right so you 'remove' 35 - 40% from right and 20% from the top, this places the men and (what I assume is) Joske's Thumb on opposing thirds.

The other two are fine as they are.

Regarding the haze, are you referring to just the first two ? If so there is almost always a haze over this view in most weather conditions I believe caused by the hot and high humid conditions, often low cloud and smoke. The lighting was to immediate right of me and I was using a lens hood.

If you are referring to haze in the last shot for some time now I have had concerns about this lens as it is showing signs of fungus and at times I wonder if this is affecting image clarity in certain lighting conditions as most shots are fine.

Thanks, I'll have a go at reworking No 2 with your suggested crop.

I have had a go at No 2 and come up with a square crop and B&W conversion. I believe it has improved the impact of the shot from original but wondering if I'm trying to achieve too much from what was originally a test to practice my exposure control in harsh lighting.

But then again that's the fun of photography
