Drawing on the Beach | In the Arctic

Near tropical storm force winds came through St. Augustine April 22nd, we made the best of it...

The winds changed the landscape quite a bit and made for some interesting patterns in the sand:

Outstanding images, especially #1. I would throw her just a bit off center though.

I like the feeling of those images. I loved St. Augustine when I was stationed at the Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.

Very nice images, that first one has such movement.

    Both are fantastic.

I would try a small vignetting in the sky in the first one to enclose and frame the girl.

Interesting point that and it's a good image to study an appraise, I think, for those who are exploring and learning about, composition. Where would you place the child?

I like it as it is. The reason I say that is that is think it helps create the sense of space. We have this vast area of beach stretching away on both sides of her. I'm not sure that would have worked so well if she had been more to one side. I really, really like that one.

I totally agree with Donald and I just realized why:

First of all the rule of third is not the magic recipe that should be applied to every image. It usually works but "rules" are to be broken.

Now for this particular image at first subconsciously I "saw" the girl drawing a circle on the sand (probably with her in the middle I don't know) and that gave me the impression of symmetry. Of course that's not true but that was my feeling at first. I think it was emphasized by the central placement of the child and the leading lines on the beach. This "motion" is also amplified by the windy hair and the fine contrast and tonalities of the image.

Just lovely, lovely, lovely. Rob, you have done a wonderful job with these. I like the PP method you have chosen for these images! I would agree with just a bit of vignetting. The compositions are very pleasing.

Thank you very much for commenting Travis, Richard, John, Miltos, Christina and Donald!

I did try adjusting the crop a bit however wanted to ensure the (a) scale wasn't lost and (b) the symmetry seemed to better support the Converging Lines effect created from the streams of blowing sand.

If I can swing it I'll post a short video taken at ground level pointing right into the wind - living in Florida I've experienced my fair share of strong winds but nothing like this...

Thanks Marie - that's two votes for vignette, I'll give that a shot for sure. Thanks!

Video of the high winds below - camera is in an underwater housing so the audio is muffled but the last 8-10 seconds or so you can hear the sand peppering the glass:

Hi Robert. I think the composition in 1 is great. The girl and the ground are all being drawn toward the horizon. I can't help but feel that this image needs either more contrast or clarity or black.

Hi Robert. Yeah. I think you added just the right amount of additional tweaking to this image.
