The view from the amphitheatre

This is the view from the amphitheatre in Souk Madinat, Dubai (used as a Pitstop in "The Amazing Race" a few years ago)

It's when you start scrolling around those people drinking and smoking in, I take it to be, a hotel lounge area that you really appreciate what you mean by saying it's got quite a bit of detail in it. Staggering.

This is an excellent pano, and a great example of a photo that wouldn't work in B&W. The solitary blue on the Burj al Arab creates a nice, strong focal point.

May I ask a question: I see here there are sets of 3 horizontal logs with their ends sticking out (in two directions) on each corner of the yellow lit towers - do you know their purpose?

I think I have seen this on similar structures too, is it just an 'architectural style' thing, or is there a purpose (bird roosting)?

Thanks Donald. I like to get a human element in the final image if possible - difficult when blending multiple exposures though. This is not a hotel, but the souk is a tourist attraction and attached to two hotels (who have liquor licenses) so there are licensed bars in the area. You feel a bit naughty having a beer outside here while Emiratis and Saudis are wandering by (even if they have just had a few pints themselves)

Thanks Dave. These are updated of the tradition architecture of wind towers. These modern versions have no practical use at all, whereas the originals caught wind and funneled the breeze down through pipes into the courtyards and rooms beneath. I don't know what the logs were originally for though...

Might they have put sheeting over them on the lee side, to stop the breeze blowing straight through?

I believe the ventilator scoops on ships could be rotated to face the wind for similar reasons.
