Slumping barn. C&C and opinions please

Of the three variants I like the colour one best, mainly for the fragments of red paint and the earth tones in the foreground. The dry old wheat stems are just too pale and prominent in the sepia or black and white. However the problem may be my process rather than the subject.

Any opinions as to which one you prefer?

Any tips on making a better black and white or sepia version?

I have include the original, with cloning out of sensor spots and a gas plant in the background, out of camera for people to play with to make your own interpretation; a good learning experience for me.

I do like the untouched original for some reason - maybe it is the richer tones.

I added labels to the original post, it was confusing as the original is the last version and all the processed versions are above it and unlabelled

I like the first one best. However, monochrome versions often command different crops and compositions than color versions. I think this may be an example, as the foreground isn't interesting enough to me to make a monochrome statement. I like the barn itself better in monochrome, especially if you would bring out its texture better during post-processing. So, I think there is a better composition to me made to complement the monochrome bard.

Interesting version, it intrigues me to see other visions of the same image.

This is a tighter shot on the same day/time, cropped slightly to make the barn absolutely dominate. The darn gas plant is there, my cloning skills are insufficient to make it vanish in this version.

My attempt.

Silver Efex pro2 Demo (That I downloaded about an hour ago... Nice timing.)

Then in CS6 I de-saturated the yellows in the original enough to get rid of the yellow in the grass and placed the Silver Efex abvoe it at 80% opacity.

Crop.. and off to the interweb.

The monochrome composition I was thinking of is more like Robbie's though with a bit more space on the right side if you have an image that allows it.

Thanks Robbie and Mike. The dark barn is an effect I was trying for but unable to achieve with the limited tools or skills (it is a poor workman who blames his tools) at my disposal. I may have to spring for SilverEffex if I want to really explore black and white. I like the crop too.

May have to revisit this and get a little more on the right to play with.

Hi Trevor it has distinct possibilities but needs a bit of a make over first.



I would do this to the real estate photographs I take but someone would moan about false advertising.
