Photoshop Elements beginner

I am trying to single out an item to show in color and the rest of the image in b&w or sepia. Any idea how to do this in Photoshop Elements 8? Would love to be able to do this!

Hi Sarah,

I've never done this myself, but I can think of several different ways.

Probably the crudest of which is...
Use a 100% strength Desaturation brush tool on the areas you want to be monochrome.
Make good use of image zoom and varying brush sizes to get a good edge.

Now that's really, really crude - I'm sure someone that has actually done this, perhaps the way using two layers; one mono, one colour and reveal the colour through the mono, could help out?

I'd recommend using a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer with the saturation set to -100%. Then simply paint the layer mask with black/white with the brush tool to get it looking how you want.

A quick and dirty technique I use for this kind of thing is to simply create 2 isentical layers - make the bottom one grayscale - and then just erase what you don't want coloured from the top one

I have Elements 6, which shouldn't be any different in terms of how things work for the most part.

1. Use the "Selection Brush Tool", brush over all the parts you want to leave color showing.

2. Then Select Inverse (Ctrl + Shift + I)

3. Then Remove Color ( Ctrl + Shift + U) for Black n White

or Go to Effects on the choose "Photo Effects" Choose Monochrome Color from the drop down menu, then double click on Sepia and it should be changed.

Once you do it a few times, it gets easier. ITs a good program and I have been using it nearly 2 years. Tho will be upgrading to CS4 in the next month.
