Lucky you. A year ago, I was walking in town when I twisted my ankle, fell flat on my face and slammed my forehead into the ground. In the few seconds it took to recover and try to lift myself off the ground a teenager tried to steal my wallet from my back pocket. Plenty of people walked past, but no-one offered a hand.

Hi Greg, sorry to read about your mishap, but I am wondering where you live in Australia, because I don't know where is the "gong" ?
I, but perhaps I am female, have never experienced something you had in Australia.......

    Greetings,
    Griddi......

Griddi, there is a little town about 80km north of where I am, called sydney. This used to be a really scary place, but then Tom left.

Did someone get a shot of you on the ground? Maybe you could have done a 'selfie'.

    PEDESTRIAN - adjective
lacking inspiration or excitement; dull: disenchantment with their present, pedestrian lives.

Calling these images pedestrian would not apply. As a floundering novice still finding his way around the camera and still having miles of distance between what he wants to portray and the images that come from his camera......these shots are inspiration. Can't say why, won't even attempt to analyze (nor am I even sure I care why) how they work for me but they do.
    Good stuff.

Your definition may very well be the case, Andrew, but that pretty well applies to most of us. Although we may develop a sense of importance at times it's usually egocentric and no-one else notices. Most people on the street are just pedestrians, moving about their ordinary lives in an ordinary way. When I'm out there poking my camera about I have three things running through my head: what are they doing? How did they get here? And where are they heading? Then I endeavor to capture that. That requires a bit of manipulation of the truth for a start. I have to make up my own story and work with that. Then I look around and see what I can fit in the frame that might help with making connections with other things that will help me tell the story. Things like architectural structures, space, other people. Finally I'll manipulate the contents to emphasize certain points, what I call 'visual adjectives' such as contrast, blur, texture, light and colour.
Some people might call this street photography and consider it a bit like wildlife where its a game of spontaneous shooting to capture the moment. It certainly is capturing the moment but the process is as far from spontaneous as Gillard is from getting voted in next election. It's carefully prepared, planned, observed and thought out. Some days I'll wait for hours for the right placement of all things. There are those times when it happens before my eyes but usually I'm I'll prepared because I'm watching some good looking woman pass by or needing to find a loo.
The results don't suit everyone but over the years I have developed a philosophy regarding my own photos. I like them all. In that way I am assured of at least one admirer. Always be happy with your own results. It's the best you've done up to now. The next one will be even better.
