Thanks everybody for the appreciation/enscouraging words.
Regarding #3: yes when it comes to photographing birds, it's all about feather details. And for that either you need a loooooong lens or you need to get real close to the bird. I'm using a 70-300 mm lens on a 550D (480mm FFE) which is just ok only if you can get close to these little guys. This bird was so engrossed in enjoying the evening golden lights that he never even looked at me approaching (I was approaching and shooting him at every step I was taking forward). Finally I got this fullframe shot from a distance of 2 meters!!! And that was too much for him, the next shot was exactly the same: only the bird was not in the frame..........
