    Got a new toy!!

Well, I finally did it. I upgraded my camera. Now I have a whole new learning curve. This ought to be a fun journey. I will keep my powershot sx30is, but now I have a Canon T5i w/18-55mm & 55-250mm. Now I can REALLY start dumping money into this hobby of mine.

This is a friends Basset Hound, Molly. She is kinda shy.

With results like that, it's money well spent.

I think I may have to do something I don't like to do...read the instructions to figure out what all these buttons are for!!

When my uncle was putting toys together on Christmas Eve (actually, more like the wee hours of Christmas day), he always had a stock phrase: When all else fails, follow the instructions. True to form, I can absolutely assure you that he would wait for everything else to fail before he would do that.

    Jon,

I don't "follow" gear, so I don't know the important differences between your old toy and your new toy. If you care to expand just a little bit about that, it would be fun to enjoy vicariously what you're experiencing in the transition.

Mike, the SX30is is a glorified point & shoot, JPEG only. The T5i is a DSLR. While both have full manual modes, the T5i has a slightly different confirguration of buttons. This confuses my little brain
I had just recently gotten used to shooting in full manual mode with the SX30is...Now I have to learn how to shoot full manual with the T5i.

I'm thrilled for you when everything works out and sympathetic with you when the inevitable happens that it doesn't quite go that way. I assume one of the things you're going to have to get used to is having a smaller depth of field, which will be sheer joy when you want it and pure frustration when you don't and haven't made the necessary adjustment.

Jon here is a link to a great user guide for your new toy. I ordered one for my 6D and am so glad I did. Much easier to comprehend than the canon manual.
