David: need more info to give you the correct advice, as you say IMB type I assume PC type. There are 10 year old models, 2 year old models and ones that came out last week. So to just say IBM type is of no use what so ever, so go into details of what you have.

Look here: Adobe Lightroom 5 Minimum Specs <-- Linkage.
This came as a surprise to me but LR 5 requires Windows 7 (SP-1) or Windows 8 according to the Adobe website. So if you're running Windows XP it appears you're out of luck. Wow...

I am running XP pro with all the upgrades, on a Pentium 4 but only have 4 GB now. I not really interested in 5 right now. I need to learn more about the program. I've seen some real good results from 4.
Thank you for your time.

David: I do not know if you can still get LR4, in the stores. Usually what seems to happens is with Adobe, the product goes on sale with a good discount and a week or two later the newer version comes out. As Adobe will not let older versions stay of the shelf with the new ones, the older ones are pulled, sent back to Adobe and destroyed. The destroyed versions are then accounted for as write offs for the accounting department. So I do not think that you will be able to purchase a copy of LR4, this happened to me I was thinking of getting LR4 when to the store at 10 am, LR5 released at 9 am, all copies of LR4 had been removed for shelves and were no longer selling them. I believe that with XP, a Pentium 4, and 4GB ram your are going to be out of luck.

As of today, 2minutes ago, LR4 is still available from Amazon in the USA (and in the UK) Not many copies left, though!
LR 4 does not run on XP. You need at minimum Vista. LR 5 requires Windows 7 or better.
