Put the cat in the house and went out to get the shots I intended earlier in the day.
This Killdeer is nesting in our driveway. We have fence that runs between our driveway and our pasture with a few cedar trees alongside. I went to the trouble to put on the bug spray and carry the tripod into the pasture and around behind the trees so that I could get closer without disturbing the bird. Since the driveway is along an elevated terrace, it also allowed me to get low using the tripod without having to lay on the ground.
These are shot at 400mm, 1/640 & 1/400, 5.6, ISO 400 and are cropped 30% & 50%. The late evening sun was behind me. I was very particular about the background and the foreground and did not have to do any cloning. I like the angle I got on the second because I was able to better crop out the out of focus foreground. But a higher angle to completely get rid of out of focus foreground was not pleasing because that showed too much of the asphalt in the driveway which took away from the natural look of the environment. I'm pretty pleased with the final shots but as always, like to hear other perspectives.
