    Off topic- this is my third favourite landscape shot from colin. The first is "complicated sunset" and second is "Haulashore Island - Revisited".

    They're not necessarily essential, but they can make the job easier. At a minimum having a tripod with some kind of panning ability is very handy, although you may have to spend more time leveling it etc compared with a panning head on top of a ball head.
