View from the Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs stretches across a Venice canal from the courtrooms in the Palace of the Doge (at the image left) to the Venice Prison complex (at the image right)



The Bridge of Sighs is named for the sighs that the prisoners were said to have uttered as they took this last view of Venice and freedom as they crossed the bridge into confinement, sometimes for the rest of their lives....



BTW: Marco Polo is said to have been confined in this Venice Prison when he wrote his famous travel book. Now, the Venice Airport is named after him. Things have certainly changed!

Hi Richard I like both photos a little different from the Bridge of Sighs in Cambridge belonging to St John's College of Cambridge University. It was built in 1831 and crosses the River Cam between the college's Third Court and New Court.
