Hi,
Driving with the camera around the neck is a bad habit.Sometime,with my wife always objecting against,I lift it and press the button(without looking through viewfinder)I use a 12-24 mm zoom with pola filter at f/11, and time how little(short)The God wants(aperture mode).

If we tried this in the UK we would probably end up with a noose around our neck not a camera! The police here are a little 'hot' on motorists transgressing the many laws covering motoring offences. I say 'motoring offences' it's probably more accurate to say that motoring is an offence. It's also a great revenue earner from fines for offences. I haven't heard of anyone being prosecuted for shooting while driving, but that must add a new twist to the urban phrase 'drive-by shooting'. I couldn't resist that, sorry.

I'll have a go at this next time I crank the old GT up to 130mph on a nice twisty road. But the wife while probably be driving, while I shoot.

First thing - this is not easy at all. I never realised how bad our roads are.
Second thing - I should have got my wife to clean the windscreen first. Such domestic details enhance one's photographic output, I find.

Not as good as yours, I think. I need more practise. Taken with Canon 50D and Tokina 11-16mm @12mm. EXIF here

I'm wondering.... if I mount the camera on a tripod and wedge it into the passenger seat while I drive, I could then use my plug-in auto shutter release gadget to take shots as I'm going along - say, 1 shot every 30secs? The tripod would hold the camera steady, and if I used a slower shutter speed at twilight I'd get nice light trails from on-coming cars and street lights. Anyone tried this?

And another thing. This would make a great theme for a competition. Everyone can do it, even if you jumped in a taxi, or took a shot from a bus or train.

I've never tried it, Rob, but it sounds interesting. Holding a shutter release in hand would give more predictable results. An infrared might bounce off the windshield (or windscreen, whichever your car has).

I expect that the slower shutter speed would show a lot of effect of camera vibration/random movement: I know they use very expensive stabilization systems on commercial video systems in moving vehicles to create smooth movement. But that might add an interesting effect: who knows?

So I stole Rob's idea, and put the camera on a tripod: I'd say the idea's a good one. I just went out to the food store, 10 minutes each way, and got one interesting shot and one that I like because I see it every day. And the light was quite variable, and not a good time of day.

Here's the setup:



The camera is about even with me, in the center of the car, and I used a wired remote. I had it set on <P>, ISO 100, autofocus on the center point, with IS on.

This one is interesting, I think, with the perspective and the clouds.



This one I like personally, because I see it often. It's the end of the road our house is on.



The whole process is quite sensitive to sun direction. Since the windshield glass isn't optical, getting the sun on it from many angles is a killer, like this.



I think the concept is certainly a good one to explore more.

Well done, Rick. Shows how adaptable tripods are too. I must have a go of this later. I think it would be best at twilight, as Radu's are. That way you eliminate the glare from the sun, although exposure times may become more of a problem.

I just worked out that if you do 14,000 miles a year at 40mph, that's about 350 hours driving. In all that time you take the view out of the car window for granted. But when you see a still shot of it like this it looks almost surreal. It must be something to do with capturing 'a moment in time'. I'm also reminded of those old ads from mid-last-century showing the freedom of the open roads, normally advertising travel destinations.
