I don't think it should. The old Smugmug never did. Anyone could leave a comment.
FWIW and to confirm. I have my regular browsers permanently logged into Smugmug, and it allows me to leave a comment. It know it's me 'cos my face pops up. I didn't leave a comment because I had nothing to say

If I use Explorer, which is not logged in, then it does ask me to before leaving a comment.

    Hi, RIchard -

Since they're apparently asking your opinion, why not tell them (after you've given the new modes a fair try) that you'd like for them to leave the old method(s) in place as one of the options for organizing the images and why you like the old method? Having worked for a number of years in software design and development plus more than a few years doing user interface design, I was always thrilled when somebody appreciated a tool that worked exactly to perform the function they wanted.

I still like the original index.html page of a University where I worked in the 1990s as the fastest, most flexible, and cleanest design I've ever seen for a web page. I didn't have to search for the page for the link to faculty or staff directory (I find that around 20-30 percent of why I use a University website is to find somebody's email address in a directory), figure out whether that particular University considers its library resources to be part of its educational function or research function, and on and on. In that page, I could get directly to the third layer in the website from the front page (or go one by one by one). Both worked equally well.

    I'm jes' sayin'....

I've now had a reply back from the 'Smugmug Heroes' (i.e. the help Desk) (they are very, very good - quick courteous replies).

Indeed it seems as if you want to make a comment on the 'Comment' page, you have to log in with either a Smugmug account or a Facebook account. This is an obligatory, exciting new development on the new Smugmug. Well, I don't like it, but there's nothing I can do about it if I want to have a comments page. Very annoying and I cannot see the sense of it.

It's the only thing that has irritated me about an otherwise excellent revamp of the Smugmug resource.

I visited Donald's site and clicked on the 'contact me' words and immediately was in my OE to write him a message, I wasn't at that stage viewing any of his albums.

It is nice that SmugSmug enable you to build multiple photo pages with links as it is quite a tedious task writing html to do this though not sure I like the cropping to square business.
Still I am or was somewhat pedantic and used to have two files for each photo, a smallish thumbnail [200 pixels 20Kb across] and a large file at 800 or so across 100Kb. with the idea of fast loading for those who like me then were on dial-up.

On the 'e-mail me' taking you right to OE, I put that in with a hyperlink, using the HTML tag <a href>.
    It is < a href=mailto:xxxxxxxxxxx@yyyyyyyyyy.zzz>e-mail me</a > NB - don't include spaces.

Also, the choice of square thumbnails is mine. There are a number of formats, including 'original', offered in which you can display thumbnails
