Sorry for low quality, I take it with Canon SX130IS, Thats all I have.
Hello Bruce, sorry for this delay, but I only saw your post today.
Actually we call it Azores anticyclone, due it´s position around the Azores islands in the mid Atlantic.
In the Winter is usually south of the islands allowing the low pressure systems to move from east and approach our coast line with rain and winds from southwest due to CCW rotation.
In the summer it moves north and when it is centered west of the Atlantic coast we have northwest winds, that nobody likes around here, specially late afternoon and evening, if by any chance the center extends into the bay of Biscay we will have hot and dry eastern winds, usually weak, more like a breeze, this happens two or three times for a short period during the summer. These characteristics are for the western coast of Portugal.
I'm no weatherman, but when I lived at the apartment where the photos were taken (12 years) it was relatively easy to observe this weather patterns, and because of it I got interested in weather and cloud pictures.
This is just a short description, and I will had some more detail later.
If it helps here is a link to our national forecast center, where you can see under Weather/Meteorological charts what I'm talking about.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Steve. Wonderful image.

Neko,
Thanks so much for the image and information. I like the different layers of mountains.

Bernardo,
Thanks very much for the explanation. I brought up the webpage you provided. I know Spanish, so I was able to follow most of the discussion in Portuguese. Also, the discussion is similar to those on our National Weather Service pages, so that was familiar too. Still, nice to see weather discussed from a different side of the Atlantic!
Thanks again, Bruce
CiC forum members,
Some time ago I requested sunrise and sunset photos from you all. A meteorologist colleague and I had some ideas concerning the best weather for sunrises and sunsets. We wanted to use some images to either support or modify these ideas and publish our results in a photography magazine or book. We assembled into a proposal a few sample paragraphs, a cover letter, and photos. We submitted the proposal to a few well known nature / outdoor photography magazines, but did not hear back from the publishers, neither a yes nor a no.
The images you have submitted have been wonderful to look at and do some armchair traveling with. Nothing like seeing a beautiful tropical sunset over a southern ocean while I'm sitting inside on a northern wintry morning. The images and your correspondence has made the world a smaller, prettier, and more friendly place. As for the article and book, alas, my colleague and I are putting those on hold. So while I welcome continued sunrise/sunset photos, I no longer plan to use them in a publication. Should that change, the original agreement to acknowledge your work will, of course, stand.
Thanks very much and Happy 2015.
Best regards, Bruce
