I believe it was flying, yes. Perhaps not as well as its friends, but it was making do.

I have a blackbird in my garden with a similar problem; probably from an encounter with a cat.
It is a bit unsteady in flight and somewhat ungainly when landing at times. But is surviving OK. At least on my bird table!

Nice series of a cute little bird. I've seen several youngsters hopping around in the past few weeks. As a retired pilot, I find it humorous to watch these "student pilots" try to land on the pegs of the bird feeders. It reminds me of some of my landings! Your subject resembles a house finch with that breast coloration but its hard to tell at this age.
