    Total Newbie!

Hello! I have a Nikon 5100 with the standard lens. Before all I had was a point and shoot. So I'm trying to step outside my box and trying more pics. I would like someone to critique my photos if you have a moment. http://www.flickr.com/photos/99485411@N04/ User Terri Gardiner.....As you can see, the lake pictures on just on auto....Moon pics also. I do not yet have a tripod but very open to suggestions!!

Hello and welcome to CiC. I hope you enjoy being involved.

Just a couple of comments to hopefully help you on your way.

Firstly, CiC is about learning and I hope you will find that there are lots of people on here willing to offer help and advice.

But in order to get comment on your pictures, it's much better if you can post specific pictures into your messages here and ask for specific advice, rather than just direct people to a large and very varied number of pictures on Flickr. I think you'll find that you're likely to get more and better responses.

If you ever need any help in getting images posted into your message, then please do read the helpful guide that walks you through how to do it. Click HERE to read the thread.

Sometimes people are not sure about asking for comments and criticism on their images. This thread gives you some helpful advice and guidance about how to get the best feedback from fellow members.

And lastly and not so much about getting C & C on your pictures: - So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hello! My name is Hope and I also am a total newbie. Haven't even purchased a camera yet, but hoping to snag one on Black Friday! Same camera as yours, the Nikon 5100. Just wanted to say hello and hopefully we can help each other along, everything about photography can be pretty confusing!

You will get much better control with the camera you have chosen than the one you are using now
It is much easier to learn if taken one step at a time. Once you understand one step move on to the next.
You may find it helpful to use the automatic settings at first. pay attention to the numbers the camera picks. shutter speed aperture, and ISO they are good starting points. Leave the white balance(AWB) on auto for now. Concentrate on getting good exposure and focus. Change only one setting at a time(If you change more than one you won't know witch worked when you get a good result) Read the tutorials here and NEVER be afraid to ask questions!!

Above all practice and have fun!
