Hi all,
I'm not saying this is wrong, or unwise, for GIMP (I never use it), it may well be the safest way for the reasons one does this with a typed word processor document or spreadsheet, but just in case anyone gets carried away, a few things to be aware of are;
a) If working in jpg in ANY image editor, if you save repeatedly DO NOT close and re-open the file between saves as this will degrade the image, fortunately, I believe as long as you keep the image open in the editor, the repeated saves won't matter (or shouldn't). This will be true for any lossy file compression system.
b) If working in ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) as found in Elements, LightRoom or Photoshop, there's no Save button you can't do this. All the changes are written to a database or xmp sidecar file, but I'm unsure whether this happens pretty much as you go along, or only when you click Done or (more usually) Open Image, it may even wait until you save from within the follow on program. Anyone know (now I'm wondering)?
Cheers,
Dave
Totally agree. Would never do this with a jpg. I was referring to actions on images with the GIMPs .xcf extension.I'm not saying this is wrong, or unwise, for GIMP .... If working in jpg in ANY image editor, if you save repeatedly DO NOT close and re-open the file between saves
