    Guess it is the same here in Canada as there.

    It's interesting that my friend starts with multiple photos of a scene - prints them - paints from them - which I then photograph - and print from. I'm sure there's a touch of irony in there somewhere. I think that many people probably think that the "real artist" sits at the scene for a day or so and paints what they see, where as the reality for many artists is that they can well be working from their studio on 10 to 20 paintings at once (paint takes time to dry!)

    The irony is that although the public general probably think of most photographers as not being "true artists", Artists like my friend, I think, has great respect for my skills as a photographer, retoucher, and printer (as I do for her formidable skills).

    I guess that nobody ever said that life was fair.

    Colin,

    Firstly, thank you for yet another detailed explanation of the sharpening procedure in your post. It was not my intention to want to see you put that type of detail and time into helping me but we also have many others members that I'm sure appreciate your effort equally.

    Secondly, on the subject of canvas prints and the latest few posts on this thread I had a good laugh whilst being dragged around shopping today. A visit to the local (only) cash and carry which sells just about everything between toothpaste, tents, meats, car cleaners and step ladders I browsed the stationary shelves looking for some pencils whilst the other half drove the trolley off to collect what we actually went there for.

    I came across a pile of 'canvas prints' size 12" x 12" priced at $60 FJD with no protection on their fronts and basically a mess. Browsing through looking for any scrap of inspiration I may find it very quickly became apparent that I was not going to find any.

    At that point the other half returned and the conversation went as follows;

    Oh, they have canvas prints like you want to produce but smaller.

    Yes, but they are not much good.

    Oh, here's one that's a painting.

    No it's not.

    Yes it is.

    No, it is a photograph of a typical holiday resort showing tables, chairs, palm trees, some beach sea and sky.

    But it looks like a painting, why ?

    Because it has been very poorly processed and printed.

    How do you know ?

    Because I'm pretty sure that any self respecting 'artist' is not going to spend his time including that switch, socket and all that conduit running up the palm trunk to that Par 38 spotlight at the top

    Then again there may be purist artists
