Split toning
Hi all,
I took this photo of a performer having a fag break at the Edinburgh fringe. I've cropped it in quite close and after converting it to black and white added a split tone to the highlights, via Lightroom.

Re: Split toning
Really nice study. Not sure that it needs the split toning but it does no harm.

Hi David....always glad to see another 'Fifer'
The split tone ....what do you think it contributes to the shot?

Re: Split toning
Hi Daisy,
The split toning, what dfoes it contribute? My original edit was in black and white, photo posted below. When I uploaded it to my facebook page, Dov Rob, a friend of the sitter remarked that black and white doesn't suit his personality. I didn't like the original colour shot and so thought to try a little split toning.
I like the blue as I feel i8t blends in with the darkness while helping ther skin tones to stand out.
Here's the black and white shot, comments invited.

Re: Split toning
I think it looks much, much better in black and white. He has a strong face that you have captured well and for me the blue detracts from that....but that is purely my opinion.

Re: Split toning
I've viewed this image several times over a period of three days hoping that I could get used to the blue skin tones. Unfortunately, I can't. I don't know if that's because I'm simply not used to seeing such blue skin tones or if there is something that is something inherently unattractive about them.
Though I don't add nearly as much blue as you did, I do add it to my black-and-white images quite regularly including portraits. So, it's not that I object to or am not used to seeing blue tinting in general.

Re: Split toning
Thanks Mike and Daisy
I appreciate your comments, and as I say every day's a chance to learn. Maybe its a case of at times its better to leave things as they are and leave the arty stuff to those who know, haha.
Its good to be back onto Cambridge in Colour and hoprefully I'll upload others for comments.
