A friend shared this video with me, and I think it is pretty special so sharing here.

National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen was in Antarctica to capture shots of leopard seals. One approached him, jaws wide and ready for biting...and if you haven't heard the rest of the story yet, you need to watch this brief clip.

His book, Polar Obsession, is truly wonderful. I didn't watch the video because he told that story at the National Geographic Society headquarters as part of his presentation when he released the book. I attend two or three presentations a year there and his presentation four years ago still stands out as one of the very best.

Very nice. In another National Geographic documentary, one photographer said that being willing to put yourself in danger is the difference between a pro and an amateur. At the end of the documentary they mentioned that one of the featured photographers died during one of their excursions.

I cannot conceive of a picture that is worth risking one's life to capture.

Yes, I think it is very special.

It's very sad to hear that a photographer lost his life but I think everything we do in life has inherent risks and that life is far more rewarding if one does what they love... of course with a mind to minimize every possible danger.

Most of the photographers in the documentary were thrill seekers (photographing while free jumping), wildlife, or photojournalists. War photographers, somebody has to do it, but as you said, so many inherent risks involved.
