    Hi Sharon,

I must apologise as I hadn't picked up on the fact that you are using Photoshop Elements (that is what's in the screenshot isn't it?) and unfortunately as a result my suggestion is entirely inappropriate as Elements does not support GPU acceleration.

As such I'm afraid I'm out of ideas, sorry

    Hi Dave,

glad it seems to be working for you. I don't use the Nik software that often so I used to turn the GPU acceleration on and off depending on if I was planning on using Nik, but it makes so little difference (small enough that I can't practically measure it) when working with 2D images that these days I just leave it off.

    Cheers,
    Ady

    My fault Ady..I don't think I mentioned I am using Elements 8.

Going to look at patches and the like now but getting really frustrated...several £100 of my 'go to' Editing suites that is simply unusable all of a sudden. :/

    Thanks very much.

    Hi Sharon

If I'm not mistaken, that screenshot of yours is Lightroom rather than PS.

    Dave

You are mistaken Dave..it's Elements 8!

I have unchecked the Graphics card acceleration re Ady's suggestion but it's still crashing all over the place.

Sharon - you could consider checking your graphics card is properly seated in the motherboard and even if it is, move it to a different slot on the motherboard making sure you take the card outside first and blow off any dust which may be on the card / fan.

Using Elements 8 could be the issue. Generally software is tested to be compatible with the most recent release; in the case that would be Elements 11. With software that is 3 generations removed from the most recent release, I am actually surprised that it runs at all.

    Steve...I will try that! Thanks.

Manfred.....Am trying to get my head round this so please bear with me.

I got Silver pro almost 2 years ago...it stated it was compatible with Elements 7 and above and has run fine until now. Are you telling me that could have changed without anyone informing me/ asking me to upgrade and without a bunch of annoyed elements 8 users at least showing up on a search of related sites?

    Re: Photoshop crashing

It could Sharon. Software does get updated (patched) over time to take care of issues that are reported to or detected by the software maker. I vaguely remember a patch being issued some time after Windows 8 was released. Sometimes there patches do have intended consequences and break things the worked previously. There was also a patch issued after Google bought Nik and updated some of the screens with the Google logo; who knows what was done "under the hood" with these updates.

If you look at the Nik support web page, it specifically says Elements 9 - 11 are supported.

Thank you so much Manfred ...and everyone who has offered help and advice on this.

Looks like Nik have moved the goalposts....I will forebear from commenting on the dragon 'Google's' probable hand in all this!

    Re: Photoshop crashing

Sharon - all the "supported" designation is that it tells you that they ran a suite of tests with the software combination and it passed. The not supported may simply mean that they did not do any testing, or possibly not all of the suite passed.

Once software gets to a certain "age", the producer simply sees no real point in testing because most users no longer use something that is several generations old.

I remember having to move from XP to Vista because Adobe wrote software that was not supported on the older operating system.

    Re: Photoshop crashing

Ok...I took all the above on board and was off to buy Elements 11

However just before I went out I loaded a RAW file up to Elements 8 and lo and behold the plug- in worked. I tried another and another, they all worked. I loaded a jpeg and it crashed.

For some reason that escapes my little blonde head it is working perfectly if I load the RA W file. Often I use the Nik plug-ins later in my processing and so am using the jpeg but if using them first with the RAW file means I don't have to hand over £100 to Adobe just yet then am quite happy to alter my workflow a bit!

    Watch this space!

    Re: Photoshop crashing

Try viewing the JPEG that caused Elements 8 to crash using a Windows photo viewer. If it also doesn't load in that viewer, it's likely that your JPEG is a corrupted file. I have no idea what would corrupt it, but you do have to rule corruption out as a possible cause.

Hi Sharon, I've been following this thread with interest, but not really able to offer any advice different from that you have been getting already.
But, regarding the jpeg issue, you should be able to extact the embedded jpeg directly from the raw file. (At least, this is possible with Canon cr2 raw files, but may not apply to other raw formats). The utility can be downloaded from several sources on the web. My thought is that if you have the raw source, reextracting the jpeg would enable you to process that and see if a crash is precipitated. If not you know you have a corrupt jpeg from the camera.

As regards elements 11, I think there is a half price offer at present (Amazon... £40?)

There is one thing that my Guru of past years impressed upon me is that it is not sufficient to simply un-install something but once you have done that you need to re-boot and then after you install you should re-boot too. Tedious but essential in the old days ...not a computer wizz so don't know if one needs to do this with todays equipment now my guru has gone to another country
