I Hate Black Birds...
I captured these images yesterday at Circle B Bar Nature Reserve. The bird is a sub-species of the Boat-tailed Grackle having brown eyes and a shorter tail found in north central Florida. After working these up black is by far the most difficult to expose. C&C welcomed and appreciated. Thank you for viewing.

I agree Joe - and in my experience; especially in harsh sunlight - and certainly if backlit
Perhaps, as with bear fur, best captured on an overcast day?
(but ideally not against the sky as they'd have been here)
But if anyone can, you can (pull it off)

Re: I Hate Black Birds...
Hi Joe,
I'm not overly fond of photographing black birds either... I've been trying to photograph black cormorants on water. I use spot metering and overexpose a little bit, I can expose the bird with no clipping but of course my water looks dreadful.
Even so, beautifully composed and focused, and you've captured the bird's personality wonderfully. I hope to see more of your black birds so I can learn to photograph them well, too.
