    Mini Competition #60

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post images in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forum

    Unlikely Christmas Card

It don't look like this but C&C welcome. HDR is really hard this is 10.6 ev span and the balance is taken from a grey card and later from the snow to yield the same. It doesn't look like this but I like it anyway. Just wished I could take photo's

    Hi Arith,

The "bottom line" is that if you're going to have full sun in a scene then it's going to blow the highlights.

It's a pretty hard thing to get away with -- I think you did pretty well.

    Re: Unlikely Christmas Card

A question for you to mull over, Arith: Do you photograph to record reality or for the artistic view you visualize when you were looking at the scene? I will say it again: the camera is merely a repository for the photograph. The picture is in your mind.

I think you did quite well in creating an artistic view in that shot. It pleases me, even if it doesn't fully please you.

    Eilean Donan Castle

One from our drive to Lochalsh. A little history of Eilean Donan-

The name Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, is most probably called after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. There are several churches dedicated to Donan in the area, and it is likely that he formed a small cell, or community on the island during the late 7th century.

For the best part of 200 years, the stark ruins of Eilean Donan lay neglected, abandoned and open to the elements, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. Along with his Clerk of Works, Farquar Macrae, he dedicated the next 20 years of his life to the reconstruction of Eilean Donan, restoring her to her former glory. The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases and was formally completed in the July of 1932.

    Re: Unlikely Christmas Card

Cheers Colin and Pops; I set myself standards higher than my ability but the picture does please me in an artistic sense. I think the idea of photographs is sometimes to convey a mood rather than reality and the most pleasing pictures to me are ones that do that. Cheers.

And now we curse and swear during the summer as we're stuck behind the queues of buses, caravans, RVs, etc that grind to a halt when they see Eilean Donan come into view, and we're rushing to a shinty match at Balmacara, Lochcarron or Skye (plug for Scottish Tourism). Indeed, it's a spectacular bit of the world - being done more than justice here and in the monthly challenge (if I may say so ahead of voting).
