In my view, congratulations are due. This is a beauty. Where you've placed the abbey in the image; the fact that you've got that dominant cloud edge just clipping across the top of the abbey at that angle; the way the light is falling on the water in front; the line that the water creates in the image; and so on, and so on.

What works really well, I think, is the relationship between the majesty of the abbey and the, comparatively, modest buildings at the left hand edge. There's a softness to those buildings at the LHS when image viewed at full size. Don't know if this was deliberate, but it works.

I think you've positioned yourself perfectly to get a wonderful composition. And once out of the camera, you've treated it magnificently.

Can't find anything to say about what could have been improved!

I agree completely with Donald. A stunning image, beautifully composed and bags of atmosphere. If I really have to find something to nit pick it can only be blob of what appears to be a wall at far right 2 thirds of the way down. You must be very pleased with yourself on creating this work...excellent

Any chance we can see the colour and greyscale versions?

Thanks for your comments. This was taken under fairly tricky conditions as the abbey was closed when we got there, so this was taken whilst balancing on the perimeter wall. Its the best shot of about eight that I took from various points and is my favourite.

I agree. It doesn't have the same mood and atmosphere.

Love the mood portrayed in the first image.

The second is lack is composition if anything, maybe a good crop could help.

As well as being visually striking (the first one in particular), this is actually intrinsically interesting, not just another overcooked picture of nothing much. If someone were to produce the definitive work about the abbey, this image could well belong in it.

I know it may be difficult to get the entire structure in the frame but I think a lower perspective would be very dramatic.

The problem is that to get a shot when the light is at its best you either have to stand well back i.e. outside the grounds or break in as it shuts too early
